Competing for the first time at the Australian All Schools, the 13 year old had a nervous start and fouled her first attempt, however she managed a 43.01m on her second attempt which moved her into second place behind South Australia’s Lauren Smith’s first round throw of 44.41m.

By round three Griffiths had found her rhythm and hurled the hammer out to a distance of 45.12m to take the lead in the competition.

In the fourth and final round Smith gave it her all, however, she could only manged a throw of 42.46m leaving her in the Silver Medal position. Griffiths entered the circle to have the final throw of the competition with the Gold Medal already secured and produced her best throw of the comp to finish with a best of 45.36m.

Fellow squad member and National U17 Junior Shot Put Champion Venita Mailei had to compete up an age group in the U18s, however, she produced a great serious of throws and was sitting in the Gold Medal position until she was overtaken on the second last throw of the competition. Mailei’s best put of 14.92m in round one was enough to claim the Silver Medal.

Venita also competed in the U18s Discus and placed fourth with a best of 41.86m.
