A Season of Hammering Success for our Golden Girl Breanna Griffiths

AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – Our golden girl Breanna Griffiths has completed her 2017-2018 season adding the National U15 Hammer Throw title to her name after claiming the Gold Medal at the 2018 Australian Junior Championships! The young Campbelltown Collegians athlete hurled the 3kg implement out to a distance of 45.58m to finish off what has been a very successful first full season as a junior hammer thrower.

At the commencement of this season the 14 year old two time Little Athletics State Discus Champion decided to quit little athletics to focus on her new passion of Hammer Throwing, a decision that has seen her go on to claim all four major hammer throw titles, which include the 2017 NSW All Schools Champion, 2017 Australian All Schools Champion, 2018 NSW Junior Champion and the 2018 Australian Junior Champion! At the NSW All Schools Championships, Breanna also broke the 20 year old hammer throw meet record.

Also competing at the 2018 Australian Junior Championships were squad members Venita MaileiAmelia MorganUnitty Ta’uo and Nicole Pili.

2017 National U17 Shot Put Champion Venita Mailei had to settle for the Silver Medal this time round in the U18 Women’s Shot Put. Venita’s preparation during the week was hindered due to her feeling unwell; however she gave it her all to finish in second place with a best put of 15.10m. Venita also placed 5th in the U18 Women’s Discus with a new personal best of 43.79m.

In the U14 Women’s Hammer Throw 12 year old youngster Amelia Morgan competing at her first national championships hurled the 3kg implement out to a new personal best of 33.16m to claim the Silver Medal ahead of fellow squad member, 12 year old Unitty Ta’uo who won the Bronze Medal with a best of 31.75m. Unitty also competed in the U14 Women’s Discus placing 4th with 33.45m, only 84cm off the winning throw of 34.29m.

In the U18 Women’s Hammer Throw competition squad member Nicole Pili gave it her all finishing in 5th place with a best throw of 46.16m.
